Sid Carter is an artful dodger, an occasional black marketeer, part-time crook and informant who becomes Lady Felicia Montague's chauffeur. Father Brown makes him the church handyman whilst trying to keep him on the straight and narrow. His skills and links to the criminal underworld of Kembleford are often needed to solve a case. He is generally seen wearing his dark green chauffeur uniform, but favours wide-collared, short-sleeved shirts and a porkpie hat when he's off duty. Originally a regular character, he continues to make guest appearances.
Biography
Before the start of the series, he becomes employed as chauffeur to the Montagues. Sent to prison before the events of "The Star of Jacob", he returns after a year in jail to take revenge on his defence lawyer. Stopped by Father Brown and no longer having regular employment with the Montagues, he drifts in and out of Kembleford life. At one time, he returns back to Kembleford on a canal boat with his girlfriend Maeve and her father, the captain of the boat. He later takes a more extended stay in Kembleford before leaving again going into 1954.

The Police
Sid, as a petty criminal, is far more critical and distrustful of the police than the other main characters. Given his first hand experience of several wrongful arrests, he sees the various Inspectors eagerness to take people into custody as confirmation of their uselessness.
